Taking a full-scale cockpit to an aviation event changes the conversation. People do not have to imagine the dimensions, the sightlines, or the difference physical controls make. They can climb in, place their hands on the controls, and fly.

In April 2024, Dogfight Dynamics brought its F/A-18C cockpit system to the 50th SUN ’n FUN Aerospace Expo at Lakeland Linder International Airport. The six-day event gave us the opportunity to put the cockpit in front of pilots, builders, aviation families, and simulation enthusiasts in the same place.

Our objective was straightforward: demonstrate what happens when the simulator is designed as one environment. The panel, consoles, seat, canopy structure, displays, controls, and supporting frame were presented together so visitors could experience the geometry rather than inspect isolated components on a table.

A complete system makes the difference visible.

A cockpit replica succeeds when the separate pieces stop calling attention to themselves. The pilot should see one forward instrument environment, find switches where expected, and move naturally between the throttle, stick, displays, and side panels.

That coherence was easier to understand in person. Visitors could see how the aluminum structure carried the cockpit geometry, how the consoles positioned the panels around the seat, and how the canopy bow completed the forward sight picture.

The simulator stayed active throughout the event, moving quickly from explanation to flight.

A public demo is also an engineering test.

Events expose a system to a wider range of body sizes, experience levels, and instincts than a workshop test ever can. Some visitors immediately knew the Hornet workflow. Others were entering a fighter cockpit for the first time. Both reactions were useful.

We watched how people entered the chassis, adjusted their position, reached for controls, read the displays, and oriented themselves without prompting. Those moments reveal where a design feels natural and where instructions, access, or fitment can become clearer.

When the controls fall naturally to hand, the hardware stops being the subject and flying takes over.

From Lakeland to the next build.

SUN ’n FUN reinforced the principle behind Dogfight Dynamics: high-fidelity simulation is not only about adding more controls. It is about organizing the entire physical environment around the pilot.

The questions we heard about compatibility, modular expansion, complete systems, and installation now shape the way we document products and plan turn-key commissions. They also continue to guide what we bring to future public demonstrations.
